Abstract

The Cleft drew the world’s attention the moment it was published in 2007 written by Doris Lessing who has got the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2007. Lessing is the 11st woman who has got this prize at the age of 88. The Cleft is the first novel after her getting the prize. Her masterpiece written in 1962 is The Golden Note. For this famously feministic writer, Denis Donoghue said that“the answer of the popularity of Mrs. Lessing’s novels cannot find in her writing skills, but in themes of her works”(.Donoghue,1985: 30)The theme about splitting seems to be more and more important in Lessing’s writings. The Golden Note has been regarded as the Bible of the feminism and viewed as the valuable feminist novel with so many breakthroughs by the Swedish Academy, although Lessing herself has never accepted the title to be a feminist, let alone the leaders of the feminism. The Golden Note did help her to be among the great feminist writers with Simone de Beauvoir and Toni Morrison. Lessing still owes the world a way to free all the human beings out of the chains of gender differences, culture, education or themselves. The Golden Note is closed, yet the searching for answering the question about how to deal with gender differences, gender biases, gender inequality and so on is still on its way. So here comes The Cleft to help the feminists out of the pessimism with the help of nature.Women and nature are among the hottest issues nowadays in the academic field. The Cleft concerns about both of them. In order to set all human beings free, Lessing cares about the status of women and the power of the nature through both feminism and ecocriticism. The Cleft carries the feminist ideas to fight for females or even human beings, and on the other hand, it gets something new in ecocriticism to emphasize the strength of the nature. So the novel indicates another way to explore the meaning of human beings and the truth to live with each other by learning and following what the nature has showed and taught us already. The Cleft tells us a newly subversive myth about human origin and built up a world that females come before males in the history of human beings. However, the argument about who comes to the world at first is not the point of the novel. The theme bases on the communication between human beings and the nature. Getting rid of the complicated relationships in today’s society and the social roles for each gender to take, it may be easier to find the truth dating back to the original era. In this dissertation, the significance exists in eliminating the line between human and nature, laying down the superiority complex of mankind and listening to the voices from the nature. Only those can regain the truth, especially the truth about two genders in The Cleft. The relationships with nature exist anywhere and anytime in the novel. The dissertation emphasizes mainly on the bonding of two genders and the symbols to open a window for the readers to appreciate it easier and deeper, and tries to figure out the harmonious opinions and ways to build up a sustainable society with balance. And the most essential way is to listen to the voices from nature and learn the harmony from nature.
