Abstract

At present, most of the criticisms on the form of "If on a Winter’s Night a Traveler" is under the frame of meta-fiction to probe into its "reflexivity".The paper will investigate its general representation, characteristics, revolutionary quality and innovation of its plural text form.The plural mixing text form is generally represented in the following:(1) The boundaries between the independent components: author, text, reader, in the traditional literature are broken. These components are mixed as part of the text in the fiction.(2) The boundaries between the traditional styles, such as fiction, criticism, disappeared and are mixed into the same text as well.(3) In the domain of fiction, the boundaries between traditional fiction types disappeared, too. Different types of fictions are mixed together, such as, love story, detective fiction, and spy fiction, etc.(4) The identical character image in tradition is broken into pieces. It becomes a mixture of different signs.(5) With respect to plot, the integrated narration chain is broken. Thus, different possibilities of the plot development mushroomed in the same text.Overthrowing the identical rules of the above components, the work successfully represents the pluralism and complexity of the text, which makes it into a chaos world.The creation of this plural mixing text form cannot be separated from postmodernism text viewpoint and Calvino’s personal literature stand. The core of the postmodernism text viewpoint is characterized by pluralism and difference, which believes that text is a place for the play of signifiers and negates the traditional closed monism text viewpoint. Calvino is at the postmodernism context and is greatly influenced by it. He hopes that literature could represent the complexity of the world. However, this aim couldn’t be achieved unless the single rule of the text is broken. Therefore, in his ideal, literature should have a complex form and could embodydifferent complex world. The unified function of these two sides creates the plural mixing text of "If on a Winter’s Night a Traveler".The position and significance of the text form of "If on a Winter’s Night a Traveler" is mainly represented in two respects: first, on the form history of western literature, the work is a complete breakthrough and innovation of traditional single closed text form; second, among the total literature texts characterized by plural mixture, "If on a Winter’s Night a Traveler" is the great integration of the most all-rounded, complete, and directed one.
