Abstract

Virginia Woolf was an important and famous female writer in the history of modern Western literature. The Waves was one of her representative works, which was finished at the summit of her creation. Over the years, it had been analyzed and commented by many scholars in China and abroad. Generally speaking, most of them focused on the definitive quality of its form: whether it is a poem and a novel or not. In a word, they interpreted its socio-historical meaning and value from the perspective of social reflection theory. However, we come to realize that its unique and value not only lies in expressing and deducing social historical, psychological and external meaning, but also lies in its distinctive artistic structure.Based on the above analyses, this dissertation turns the research angle into the work’s narrative level to probe into how the writer constructed The Waves’s inter-textual essential factors, this dissertation pays attention not to what the work says, but how it was formed and manifested, i.e. "how the work says". The Waves is new and unique in narration and the key is that it mixes poetic style with novel’s writing by making poetic artistic conception, image, narrative structure into novel. This dissertation mainly covers the following parts. The first part is to expound the poetic novel theory which is directly related to its Narrative art.The next part is to explore and analyze how The Wave is organized. In the introduction, Natural scene is put and is full of lyrically and the philosophic theory mean, make the scene artistic conception, thus, built the artistic conception of the poem. In the body of the work, Woolf constituted poetic image by using image to touch character and thus to make character become imago. The whole works was made up of introduction and body , their building and constructing the similar scene and image based on similar foundation again and putting superposing of them ,and such space structure is owned by poem only , thus, expended the poesy space. On the other hand, all these features were the result of Woolf ’s artistic exploration deeply influenced by traditional unconsciousness.In the last part, this dissertation puts The Waves on a certain system to point out its artistic position. In Woolfs writing career, The Waves incorporated the strong points of her previous stage and meanwhile was the turning point in her whole writing. In literary history of modernism, The Waves was a crystal of simplistic poetry and Woolfs own artistic exploration. In western literature history, The Waves was a pioneering work, which indicated a tendency of flowing together of types of writing, thus strengthening aesthetic function of novel.
