Abstract


Software process is a set of activities, methods, practices and converse process, which can be used to develop and maintain software and related products. The basically idea of software process technology is: the quality of software development and maintenance process has high influence on product’s quality and productivity. The goal of software process technology is to manage the software development through engineering, standardization ,and formalization. Then it has changed software’s manual production mode and realized the large-scale production mode.No matter CMM model which has been greatly supported by SEI or CMMI model which is being implemented, the ultimate aim is to effectively promote software improvement activity, improve company’s production capability, furthermore to improve the quality of software products. In September, 2004, SEPG 2004 CHINA SUMMIT, which is authorized by Carnegie Mellon University the first time, is hold in Beijing. This summit hints that our long-term work in process improvement is acknowledged by SEI.It’s no doubt that software process is the focus of software industry. Improvement action has gradually penetrated into all fields of software organization. The collection of software process assets is put intention, furthermore software organization also pay more and more attention to process asset library’s perfection and maintenance.First, it introduces software process and software process improvement’s concepts, frame ,life cycle ,and related standards or models, then introduces the derivation and conception of root cause analysis method, the types of root cause, and the usage state of root cause domestically and internationally. Furthermore It analyzes the difference between traditional problem solving methods and root cause analysis method. Then introduces CMM, domestically analyzes the deficiency of data process in software process improvement based on CMM. Furthermore it puts forward the significant real meaning when we use root cause analysis method to process software process data.In order to facilitate the understanding of the use of root cause analysis method in real project, in this article, I select a software project and monitor it. According to monitoring data, we can compute the deviation of schedule and costs, then find abnormal point to draw CF chart, then find root cause by root cause map, finally make corrective action plans and improvement recommendation.
