Abstract

In recent years, the demand for miniaturization, multiband and broadband has been presented with rapid development of mobile communications. Therefore, the size of the antenna is required to be as small as possible. Microstrip antennas have several advantages over conventional monopole-like antenna for mobile handsets. They are less prone to damage, compact in total size and aesthetic from the appearance point of view. Unfortunately, some shortcomings of microstrip antennas such as low gain, small bandwidth, etc, make them unfit for practical application. Hence, small and low profile structures such as planar inverted-F antennas (PIFA) that can be mounted on portable equipment are becoming very attractive for mobile communications. In this thesis, two novel antennas based on PIFA are studied. Firstly, the design of diversity dual-band inverted-F antenna using back-to-back metallic strips for operating in the 2.4GHz and 5.2GHz WLAN bands is utilized. Secondly, a novel compact internal five-band handset antenna covering GSM900, DCS, PCS ,ISM2450 and UTMS bands is presented. The proposed antenna consists of folded patches sharing a common shorting strip and occupies a total volume of 40.5*22*9 mm3. Details of the antenna are discussed along with simulated results. The simulation tool is HFSS from Ansoft company, which is based on FEM. The experimental results are found to be in good agreement with the simulated results
