Abstract


Relevant literature review shows that there is lack of research and training on intelligence characteristic for youth basketball athlete, whereas they are in the golden period for developing and consolidating their athletics skills, and intelligence is widely involved in various aspects of learning and practicing athletics skills. As cooperation of body and mind is required to complete any kind of activity, athletics skill and intelligence are closely correlated, yet mutually associated. Therefore, to strengthen training and cultivation of intelligence, purposely and organized, during the process of training youth athlete, i.e. the key period for intelligence development, is not a negligible issue; rather it has the decisive significant influence to the overall competition standard of youth athlete.In the foreword of this paper, starting with the history and present situation, the existing problems of athlete intelligence research are discussed and summarized, i.e., theoretically lack of understanding about athlete intelligence, and practically lack of thorough system research on intelligence development and training methods for youth athlete. An operational definition of intelligent characteristic for youth basketball athlete is proposed.In the main text, taking team members from seven basketball-tradition school teams (three females, four male) as the research objects, a series of experiments that have been carried out are presented. Sampling and investigation on the general intelligence characteristic are made for Chongqing’s youth basketball athlete, both theoretically and practically; investigation on some special intelligence characteristic is made with the Chongqing 29 Middle School men’s basketball team. The objectives are mainly cognition strategy, decision-making strategy, and special information processing speed, showed during their training and competition; accordingly an intelligence examination system for youth basketball athlete is established. Finally some assumptions made in the beginning of the paper are verified.
