Abstract


It’s a hard job for foreign students to learn Chinese characters. Nowadays, the Word-Based Theory plays a very important role in the TCCSOL (Teaching Chinese Character Speakers of other Languages), which makes the teaching of Chinese characters attached to the teaching of words. The result is that the specific features of Chinese characters are paid little attention to and it’s more difficult to learn Chinese characters. For this reason, it’s necessary to combine the features of Chinese and Chinese characters with the research findings of traditional Chinese character studies to strengthen the research of the TCCSOL.The present study starts with some mistakes made by the students in the TCCSOL, and the two disadvantages of the Word-Based Theory in the TCCSOL are brought to lighter. One of the disadvantages is the lack of understanding of the character meaning and the word-building rules. The other is that the form and the structure of a Chinese character may be mistakably mastered. Consequently, the proposal of applying the Character-Based Theory to the TCCSOL is presented in this thesis. Based on full studying and understanding the features of Chinese language, the Character-Based Theory reveals the relationship between Chinese characters and Chinese language, gives prominence to the structural features of Chinese characters, stresses the word-building factors of characters and unfolds the features of its cultural transmission. Then, the teaching principles and methodology which are based on the Character-Based Theory is put forward in this thesis. The teaching principles can be summed up as following. Firstly, Characters should act as a basis and be associated with words; by contrast, words should coordinate with characters.
