Abstract


As a special culture, jewelry design shows how people’s physical and cultural lives are. Materials are a clear manifestation of designing jewelry. How to use and treat materials has always been driving forward the history of jewelry design. Qualities, textures, colors, and aesthetic values of materials directly affect how well a piece of jewelry could express itself. And that how well people understand jewelry materials depends closely on what their living environments and regions are like. When wearing, enjoying and appreciating jewelry, people interact with the materials. Jade, for example, shows how Chinese people appreciate the beautiful by its physical appearance and the meanings with which people endow it. Through analyzing traditional materials like jade, china, paint and silk etc, this article tries to find out how exactly materials play their roles in designing Chinese jewelry, therefore to provide Chinese styles for modern jewelry-designing. Beginning with first-hand experience and by examining materials, this article attempts to reveal the very essence of Chinese culture and characteristics of the Chinese nation that are involved in and give life and feelings to the materials. Through experiments, colors, forms and texture etc could be made certain, thus we can see how design transforms from a traditional one to a modern one, hoping to activate an epoch of Chinese jewelry design.
