Abstract

There has been rare concerns to the problems of suicide in history, butsuicidal phenomenon is important in reflecting a society in its politics ,economy , culture etc. In this easy, I am going to analyze the Chinese societyfrom the special aspect of suicide problems through studies of the suicide peakin Chinese cities during early thirties of 20th century.The current studies about the suicidal problem will be first of allsummarized, focusing mainly on the concerning fields of sociology and history,as well as the research methods used in this essay and the break-throughgained from the research. .The publication of "Suicidal Theory " in 1894 isseen as the symbol that the studies of suicide entered the systematic andscientific stage. After this, that researches of the suicidal problem done bymany social scholars, makes considerable developments in researches of thesuicidal problems. According to E·Durkheim in his " suicidal theory " ,suicide is the most passive form of solving the psychological contradiction, itis the evil consequence of losing self-control. suicide is a behavior ofaccelerating one’s own death of will. It is a kind of resistance of the inherentlife-span which reflects a person’s despair and gloom . E·Durkheim alsodivided suicide into Egoism commits suicide , altruism commits suicide andabnormal suicide.The previous suicidal problem in city of China of the thirties will bestudied in this essay. The suicidal problems didn’t come into being during onenight, but from a continuity of its own history . The difference is that the focalpoint reflected in different periods is different to some extent. In history, theMay Fourth Movement to the studies of committing suicide and analysis ofsocial drawback during the May Fourth Movement paid attention only to ,atthe thought period, sociology analysis, but not the motive and the rate ofcommitting suicide , nor the classification of committing suicide. Articles,such as "Talking about the May Fourth Movement Thinker’s Study on SuicidalPhenomenon " in China’s history , concentrates mainly on one stratum, there isno further investigation into the whole society of Republic of China..I Adopt suicidal death rate as the standard of study , because suicide ratehas the nature of stabilizing in the specific colony, it is limited by variouskinds of social conditions , its change is the embodiment that the societyfluctuated, an individual phenomenon that embodies is different fromcommitting suicide. From the surface, it is one’s personal will to commitsuicide, but in fact it is the social forces that is pushing from behind.Secondly, has summarized some characteristics of suicide is summarizedthrough an analysis of statistics. The suicide rate of men and women indifferent areas is different: the rate of women committing suicide is lower indeveloped cities than that in common cities; while the situation is just theopposite in the relatively remote cities. The rate of women committing suicideis higher than women in the remote urban areas, this is mainly because that inremote urban areas the feudal influence is still strong and that the big familysystem still exists. The rate of youth committing suicide is higher than oldpeople, often reflected as the defying type suicidal mode that one should . TheSuicidal reasons differ. For men, it concentrates on the livelihood problems,and for women, the family quarrel . It is related to China’s traditional life style .The major Suicidal method is taking poison, for this is a suicidal form that isthe easiest to achieve, and the most possible to be rescued in the society at thattime. In the suicidal phenomenon of China in the 1930s, except the individualcommits suicide cases, there were also a lot of antithesis types of committingsuicide and committing suicide in the group type. The reason of familycommitting suicide is that they lose the desire to live because of economicaldeficiency. Lack of religious factor is another feature of suicide problems inChina. In research, he pointed out that the power of religion can counteractwith depression and suicide., and this is exactly what the Chinese society
