With the fast development of our economy, the basic infrastructure of the city lighting is being strengthened. Especially the high-speed development of the "digital city" brings higher requirements of the city lighting infrastructure. Now we can absorb the knowledge of geographic information system (GIS) into the road lighting information management. GIS technology can combine figures and data and provide a brand-new decision supporting method by visualizing the data. Thus, we can greatly enhance the road lighting management and offer a better way to realize computer management.Combining the practice of the lighting system of Baoding City, this article is to study the application of the GIS technology in the road lighting construction management.First, I introduce the technology of GIS, MapInfo module, and MapX module. Through comparative analysis, I use MapX module as the developing platform. At the same time I use the Access database to sort up and store massive data, which offsets the limited memory space; and use the strong developing language function of VB for the secondary development of the system; Second, I clarify the target which the road lighting information system of Baoding aims to realize, analyze the basic theory and technology, which include the electronic map of Baoding, space data management, exchange visits of figure and data, shortest route, etc. Then considering the current situation of Baoding City and the features of road lighting management, I choose the system developing pattern, and use the systematic space database and property database as the basic condition to realize the function of GIS, I also state that the system can realize the functions such as figure process, layer management, basic data input, bidirectional search, analysis and statistic, input and print, long distant data visit; finally, I finish the vectorgrah of Baoding, and set forth the modules which can realize the system function in detail.The study and development result show that applying GIS technology in city road lighting information management can enhance the effectiveness of working and managing, reduce managing cost, provide credible decision making support, realize the share of the information resource, and make the street lamp information
