Abstract


The quality of higher education is the lifeline of the university’s development and the focus of college work. Classroom teaching is the most important part of the whole school teaching all the time, which related to the survival and development of schools. After the expansion of China’s colleges and universities, both school and class sizes have also been expanded. Teaching in big classes is the inevitable choice of teaching form under current conditions. How to protect the effectiveness and improve the quality of education and teaching in big classes has also become the focus of widespread attention both inside and outside the education sector. Therefore, studying effective teaching in big classes in colleges and universities has theoretical and practical significance.At first, a detailed literature review about the researches on large-sized class at home and abroad is provided. It mainly describes the achievements and shortcomings of previous studies. After that the research questions of my thesis are formed. Next comes to the related theories and a certain key behaviors. Based on Vygotsky’s "zone of proximal development" theory and Babanski’s theory of optimization of teaching process, the research mainly analysizes Gary ’s five key behaviors about effective teaching. It includes clear instruction, task-oriented, diversified teaching, guided students into the teaching process, to ensure the success rate of students. At last, three major features about the effective teaching are concluded, namely efficient, beneficial and fruitful.The next part focuses on the methodological issues adopted by the current study. It involves the subjects and the process of implementing the study. The subjects are 10 outstanding teachers from H University. The process of implementing the study is through case study, interview and classroom observation. In order to find the reasons for the prevalent phenomenon of inefficiency in large-sized class and to find the way for teaching reform, teachers’teaching attitude and students’studying attitude are compared. In order to realize the effective teaching in large-sized class, efforts should be made by teachers, students, and other related personnel. On one hand, teachers should continuously maintain the professional value and improve teaching ability. On the other hand, the school should put emphasis on forming good atmospheres for studying and teaching. Moreover, schools should also establish systems to guarantee the teaching and studying.
