Abstract

In the world, wireless networking technology is becoming a focused point increasingly. Bluetooth is an open specification for short-range wireless connections. It works on a globally available band (2.4GHz) for worldwide compatibility. Based on a low-cost, short-range radio link, Bluetooth makes a global standard for wireless connectivity which is intended to connect desktop and laptop computers, mobiles, palmtops, printers, scanners, digital cameras and even home appliances. The main advantages of Bluetooth are, it enjoys Industry wide support, with more than 1500 companies participating in the development of Bluetooth based applications and products. The idea of using a low power and low cost approach in bluetooth protocol makes it an attractive option in almost any device. Bluetooth supports both voice and data connection along with data encryption which the user can set, this allows the integration of almost any type of device irrespective of data or voice communication. Bluetooth enables sharing of information, synchronization of data, access to the Internet, and the possibility of WPAN’ s (Wireless Application Protocol). Unlike many other wireless standards, the Bluetooth wireless specification includes both link layer and application layer definitions for product developers, which supports data, voice and content-centric applications.Swarm Intelligence (SI) is the property of a system whereby the collective behaviors of (unsophisticated) agents interacting locally with their environment cause coherent functional global patterns to emerge. SI provides a basis with whichit is possible to explore collective (or distributed) problem solving without centralized control or the provision of a global model.A scatternet is an ad hoc network of Bluetooth devices. Some works in the literature rely on the single-hop hypothesis, i.e., all devices are in radio visibility of each other. Other works refer to the more likely circumstance that devices are scattered in an area where some of them can not directly communicate. A challenging issue in this latter scenario (often referred to as multi-hop) is the design of a formation algorithm that: operates in a distributed way; dynamically adapts the topology to the mobility of devices; forms a scatternet with given topological properties. In this paper a distributed algorithm for Scatternet formation that gives rise to a tree-like structure is introduced combined with Swarm Intelligence: BBSF (Based on Bionics Scatternet Formation) . The algorithm is shown to present three key properties that make it innovative with respect to the literature in the field: it is fully distributed and asynchronous; it can be applied in a multi-hop environment; it operates in order to dynamically adapt the topology to nodes’ mobility. The key steps and rules of the algorithm are described and performance results obtained by simulation are discussed.
