Abstract


In the international communications, it is a fact without dispute that there are many factors influencing the construction and understanding of the images of other countries.On one hand, as a kind of "image", the image of other country is not a reasonable judgment but some kind of impression. On the other hand, it changes with the history, but it is stable in a certain period. The media is a force that can not be underrated to shape and construct the images of other countries. American media, with their strong economy, advanced technology, rich experience in communications and the advantage of its language, play a significant role in the construction of the images of other countries. Therefore, the study of American media’s reports on China is meaningful in theory as well as in practice.With the methods of qualitative analysis and quantitative analysis, this paper give a discourse study on those 239 representative particles which is selected from Time’s China Reports from 1992 until 2004. By describing the quantity of reporting, the distributing of content, and the theme of reporting as well, the research shows the characteristics of China’s image in Time after the cold war, and the reporting can be divided into three period. In the first period, the reporting is dominated by "human right", in the second, it is mainly about "China’s threat", and in the third period, the reporting is turning to mildness.Furthermore, combining the analysis about the linguistic context of reporting China, from the vision of Chinese image in western history and culture, as well as the vision of Sino-US relations, the research concludes that: the negative angles on reporting China of U.S medias is inevitable in long run, and in special period, it also have the deep complicacy with political, historical and cultural reasons.
