Abstract


Sentence focus is a significant kind of phenomenon in natural language and contributes to the understanding and representation of important information in sentences. Special sentence structures that mark focus are deemed as focalizing structure in this thesis. How the focalizing structures are dealt with in written translation from Chinese to English constituents the major issue and topic in the paper. To pave the path up to discussion about the major issue, the three-level theory in grammatical study and equivalence tenet in translation are adopted as the theoretical support for concerned aspects. Moreover, an attempting effort is made on comprehensive description of what focus is and devices of presenting sentence focus. Comparison between the habitual ways of using focalizing devices in the two languages has direct bearing on transfer of focalizing structure from Chinese to English. English mainly relies on phonetic devices for presenting focus, but Chinese chiefly depend on syntactic devices for that purpose. Due to such features, Chinese focalizing structures may be treated variously in the translation. Anyway, the principle of representing focus in original despite absence of equivalent focalizing structure should be carried out to an extent as great as possible. All the introduction and analysis are done in hope that translation of focalizing sentence structures can draw due attention, devices that assist focus translation can be suggested and better understanding of the concept of focus can be achieved.Structure of the thesis is as follows, for the readers’ reference:Chapter one is devoted to the whole thesis, containing the origin and status quo of researches in question, approaches adopted and preview of the major contents.
