Abstract


The ideal in subtitling is to translate each utterance in full, and display it synchronically with the spoken words on the screen. However, the medium imposes constraints on full text translation.Regarding the constraints, this study will focus subtitling on the notions of explicitation and implicitation in translation and aims to provide empirical evidence for feasible ways of explicitation and operational asymmetry (Klaudy: 2001).After framing the main theoretical issues related to subtitling in TV series and movies, and specifically to explicitation, this paper describes an in-progress research.First, the preliminary hypothesis standing at the basis of the research is outlined, which is then followed by the presentation of a small-scale theory hypothesis. Second, an account of the research method and of the phases of analysis which helped to identify cases of explicitation will be offered, and allowed for proposing an initial, rudimentary categorisation of the types of explicitation found in translation for the screen in the form of subtitling. The occurrences of different explicitation types are illustrated with excerpts taken from the TV series and films analyzed.If explicitation ever exists, the study would bring out the more positive impact on the current TV and movie subtitle translation and future at large, greatly for the better understanding and appreciating of cultural differences and exchanges.
