Abstract


People’s security related behavior is affected by their perception of security. With the rapid deployment of mobile devices and development of mobile services and applications, it is important to address the mobile information security problem from the human side. The objective of this study is to investigate factors influencing people’s perception of mobile information security, to analyze the relationship between perception of information security and users’adoption of mobile applications, and shed light on the design of security related products. A survey was conducted and analyzed with exploratory factor analysis. Five factors were identified, named perceived familiarity, perceived impact, perceived controllability, perceived awareness and perceived possibility. Among these factors, perceived impact and possibility were found to significantly affect the overall perceived risk. Users did not perceive that there is high possibility that the threats may occur to them. This may be due to their lack of experience with the threats. An experiment was conducted based on this FICAP model. It was designed to investigate the effect of familiarity, impact and controllability on users’perceived security and intention to use for mobile payment systems. Users’perceived security of payment systems was significantly affected by controllability of systems. Their intention to use the payment system was significantly affected by potential impact of tasks and controllability of systems. The classification of users as experienced user or novice user did not affect perceived security or intention to use significantly. Based on the result of the study, controllability and awareness should be enhanced when designing security products, and the impact and possibility of the threats should be emphasized during risk communication. Applications which are security critical should take security perception into consideration when seeking users’adoption.
