Abstract

Thanks to the advances in space technology, the focus of the mankind’s exploration and development of the space is now shifting from utilizing the space to controlling the space. Consquently, the mission of space vehicles is changing from minitoring the earth to orbit manuveuring in the space. The latter includes such tasks as encounter and interconnection in the space, replacement of on-orbit modules, on-orbit assembly, reconfigure and refueling. To perform these tasks, space vehiles should be able to search, track and approach targeted objects. All these depend on the information provided by navigational systems. Therefore, it is increasingly important to study navigation systems that fit into the space environment. A space-based microwave radar system has a unique strength since its operation does not rely on the availability of light. The space-based microwave radar system addressed in this thesis is used for near-distance rendezvous, monitoring and approaching. It provides information on near-distance rendezvous. This thesis presents a systematic approach toward buiding a space-based microwave radar system that can readily applied under real life conditions. This thesis first introduces technical requirements of near-distance rendezvous space vehicles on space-based microwave radar systems. It also looks into the radar cross section of space objects. It then proceeds to analyze the impact of the space environment on microwave radar systems, including the orbit, space radiation, misllaneous electronic waves from the earth, universe settings, noises and temperatures. According to above mentioned requirements and analysis, it makes a comparative study of system designs, pulse compression systems, working frequencies, angle measurement and track systems. That in turn finalizes the design of a space-based microwave radar system. Finally, the thesis analyzes the maxium distance a space-based microwave radar system reaches, dynamic ranges of a receiver and the accuracy of angle and distance measurements.
