Background Depression is a common and serious disease of great danger , since etiology is unknown . According to the World Health Organization estimates that by 2020 depression will be caused by the disabling of the most important diseases . Etiology of depression Generally, there are two views : One view is that depression is a biological phenomenon , another view from the pathological psychological point of view , that depression is due to the tensions of modern social life , highly competitive sustained in stress due to the state . Studies have shown that depression in patients with obvious cognitive dysfunctional , often make a negative evaluation of the self , the surrounding environment and the future of the world . Automatic thoughts play an intermediary role between negative self - schemata and depressive symptoms , plays an important role in the occurrence and development of the depression , to identify automatic thoughts , the cross-examination of dysfunctional cognitive , help reduce illness and shorten the course .
