Abstract


British women’s higher education originated from the women’s college of theCambridge University.In 1860s and 1870s,women’s education of the Cambridge Universitywas the precursor and leader of British women’s higher education.British women were firstlypermitted to take the Cambridge Local Examination in 1863 and Tripos in 1881.After1880s,the urban institution of Britain paved wider way for women’s higher education.In1920,the Oxford University granted women the equal educational right as men.But,at thesame time, women’s higher education of the Cambridge University stayed where it wasbecause of the traditional and conservative obstacles. After many struggles for the right ofhigher education,the Cambridge University’s female didn’t obtain the equal educational rightuntil 1947.To some extent, the process of British women’s striving for the right of the highereducation from the Cambridge University reflected the historical development of Britishwomen’s higher education.The dissertation includes four parts. Part One illustrates the background of theemergence of the Cambridge higher education of women. Part Two describes how thefemales obtain the right of attending the Local Examination.Part Three introduces the twoearliest women’s college of the Cambridge University.Part Four discusses the detailedprocess of Cambridge women’s striving for the further right of the higher education.
