Abstract

With rich resources and special scenery, island enjoys high tourist value and bright future. However, as an unique geographical unit, the island owns special properties in nature, environment, society , economy and culture. As a result, it shows characteristic in tourism development. This inevitably leads to the difference in the way of tourism development on island between that in the mainland. Furthermore, it also leads to the specific policies in the environmental protection, tourist products and sustainable development.This paper begins with a detail analysis of the developing conditions and distinguishing features of island tourism. It points out the positive affection as well as the problems existed in the process of island tourism. At the same time, it also lays stress on the analysis of the increasing problems of environmental affection. Aimed at the island’s characteristics, this study further works out special strategies of island tourism in the view of sustainable development.Based on the general research of island tourism, the paper makes a comprehensive elaboration of the tourists resources, position, advantage and threat of the islands in Weihai. In order to provide necessary data and scientific basis, a series of surveys have been conducted. The results of the survey show that the natural scenery, special culture and recreationitems have a strong appeal to the tourists. Another important conclusion can also be drawn from the survey that beautiful islands will own bright future. According to the practical situation and the results of survey, this paper puts forward the strategic aim, that is developing island tourism as one of the leading product, centering with Liugong Island and forming a develop pattern of combination of island and mainland, changing the current single mass tourism to a new style mode of vocational tourism, carrying out the sustainable development. Subsequently, strategies of island tourism in Weihai have been put forward ,such as integrating the island and the mainland, highlighting the characteristics of island, protecting its eco-environment, building recreation vocational base and delimiting capacity standard, etc. Directed by the aim, the research analyses the tourist market, draws up marketing policy and puts forward the development focal point and long-term plan. Furthermore, it also makes some emphasis on the desigh of island regional development and item plan.Finally, taking Liugong Island as a case study, this paper evaluates the current situation of this representative island. In addition to the list of problems, it also analyses the reasons. In view of Liugong Island’s unique culture and special natural resources as well as the results of survey, the study proposes the principle of" one coastline, two historic sites", that is to build Liugong Island as a vocational base of strongculture atmosphere and special resources. Then, the paper makes the plan of historical culture zone, leisure vocational zone and forest tourism zone, and at the same time, it also conducts a research of the development of tourism products of culture tourism, vocational tourism and eco-tourism. In the point of sustainable development policy, the research advances suggestions and policies of the further development of Liugong Island.
