Abstract


Objective To discuss the feasibility of thetreatment to resotore paraplegic uracratia andencorpresis in spinal cord injuries byintercostal-pudendal nerve bridging. To introducea new method for reconstruct partial sensory andurinary function of complete paraplegia. MethodsThe nerve bridging model of intercostal-pudendalnerve anastomosis by the sciatic nerve rat wasestablished. The degenerated and regeneratedprocedure of the nerve fibers at the far site fromthe stoma site were investigated under lightmicroscope(LM) and electron microscope(EM) at 14weeks post operatively. Results The slightenlargement on the stoma site was observed at 14weeks post operatively. LM observation on the stomasite at 14th week after surgery showed regeneratedaxon. EM observation on the stoma site at the 14thweek showed that regenerated nerve fibers had thestructure of normal peripheral nerve with maturedmyelin sheath. The axoplasm contained abundantmicrotubule, microfilament and mitochondria. Thereis no statistically significant difference betweenthe experimental group and the control group in thecounting of regenerated myelinated nerve fibers.Conclusion Intercostal nerve can regenerateinto and replace pudendal nerve fibers afterbridging the two nerves. The ultra-structures of theregenerated nerve fibers are generally similar tothose of the normal peripheral nerve. This canprovide theoretical basis for clinical work ofintercostal-pudendal nerve anastomosis to restoreparaplegic uracratia and encorpresis in spinalcord injuries by intercostal-pudendal nervesanastomosis.
