Blood brotherhood comes from a German word "Bluthruderschaft", and it is a way of the German knights used to swear to be true to each other. Lawrence first mentioned it in 1913. This thesis intends to generalize the blood brotherhood in D. H. Lawrence’s novels, such as The White Peacock, Women in Love, Aaron’s Rod, and Kangaroo, meanwhile, to show that the desire and search for blood brotherhood not only appears all through D. H. Lawrence’s life, but also is embodied in most of his male characters in these novels.The thesis is composed of three parts. The first part deals with that blood brotherhood is noticed as a complement in life, it is a complement to male-female relationship, and the complement to individuality.The second part, blood brotherhood also serves as an escape from personal plight, women dominance, and disharmonious marriage. At the same time, it is an escape from the Schopenhaueren’s dilemma.And at last, the blood brotherhood exists as a support to contend with the mechanical civilization.
