Study on Visual and Speech Distractions and Open-Plan Office Layout

Abstract


In order to facilitate communication between employees, as well as to save construction costs, Open-plan office has been gradually replacing the traditional closed office, to become the main form of modern office layout. However, Open-plan office, while increasing communication, places various forms of distraction on employees, mainly speech distraction, visual distraction, and noise distraction.In experiment 1, the effect of visual distraction on job performance was studied and we found out that visual distraction has no effect on simple task, but only complex tasks while the noise of footsteps have no effect on both simple tasks and complex task. Experiment 2 did further research on visual distraction factors, verified that visual distraction number and visual distraction length are two main factors of visual distraction, and increase the number of visual distraction and visual distraction time will have a decrease in complex task performance. In order to get a general result, we defined visual distraction frequency and visual distraction ratio, and establish the regression model of performance losses with frequency of visual distraction and visual distraction ratio, called the visual distraction performance loss function.On the basis of visual distraction study and with result of speech distraction from other research, the interaction of visual distraction and speech distraction has been studied in experiment 3. We found that the speech within the subjects’view and not within their view have different impact on job performance, and this imply that there’s not only speech distraction, but also visual distraction when the speech is within subjects’view. Short-term memory task and mental arithmetic task, both find that the effect of speech distraction and visual distraction exists a constant ratio on job performance, which is 1.7:1. On this basis, we set up audio-visual distraction performance loss function.On the basis of Systematic Layout Planning (SLP) method, and with the concept of face-to-face communication capacity, we developed communication based Systematic Layout Planning (CSLP) method. We use the minimum of visual distraction as a preferred standard among layout programs. And by addressing a practical layout, we described CSLP and its specific application methods to reduce workplace distraction.
