Abstract

Willa Cather (1873-1947) is one of the most famous novelists in the 20th century American literature. Since her classical work My Antonia was published, it has received great attention from the critical circle. Scholars have analyzed the novel from various angles such as new criticism, feminism, ecologism and cultural analysis and so on. One of the reasons that the work would stand out among others in American literature is its special narrative method. Narratology provides a sound theoretical basis for the research of this field. This thesis takes three aspects as the contents of researching, which are narrative situation, narrative voice and narrative time. Based on these three aspects, Grerard Genette’s focalization and narrative time theory, Wayne Booth and James Phelan’s narrative voice theory and their researches on narrative person and narrative manner are all adopted as the theoretical support to analyze My Antonia, in order to appreciate the novel’s unique narrative effect. The thesis is composed of four chapers. The first chapter analyzes the narrative situation from three angles, which are narrative person, narrative focolization and narrative manner. The second chapter explains the different narrative voices of the writer Cather and narrator Jim. The third chapter focuses on Cather’s arrangement of narrative time from three aspects, which are order, duration and frequency. In a word, Cather’s overall manipulation of each narrative element enables the readers to experience the highest quality of art while reading the novel.
