Abstract


Objective: Irritable bowel syndrome （IBS） is a common gastrointestinal diagnosis .The Symptoms of IBS are similar to those of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth. The purpose of this study was to test whether small intestinal bacterial overgrowth is associated with IBS and to assess the relationship between the tongue-coating and IBS.Methods: Sixteen patients with irritable bowel syndrome according to Rome II criteria were enrolled. The control population consisted of sixteen healthy subjects without irritable bowel syndrome symptoms. All subjects underwent lactulose hydrogen breath test to detect the basal value, cases of non-hydrogen producting, orocecal transit time（OCTT） and positive rate of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth. To observe the tongue-coating of subjects and comparison between normal and abnormal.Results: The basal value of IBS group and control group was 3.96 ± 2. 34×10-6 and 5.06 ± 3. 19×10-6 , respectively.There was no statistically significant differentence（P>0. 05）. Of 16 irritable bowel syndrome patients,6（37.5%） had no hydrogen production.In healthy controls,there was 2 non-hydrogen producting cases. No difference between groups resulting statistically significant. Of 10 irritable bowel syndrome patients, OCTT was 96.3 ± 29. 9 min. Of 14 heath subjects OCTTwas 85.6 ± 27. 59min. There was no statistically significant differentence（P>0. 05）. Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth test was found in 6.3% of irritable bowel syndrome patients with respect to none in the control group, no difference between groups resulting statistically significant（P>0. 05）.In IBS group,there was four thin yellow coating,one thick white coating and one thick yellow coating.Of sixteen IBS patients, 6（37.5%）was abnormal. In healthy controls just one was abnormal. No difference between groups resulting statistically significant（P>0. 05）,but risk ration （ RR ） =9.0.Conclusions: gastrointestinal motility of irritable bowel syndrome patients is normal, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth is rare in IBS.
