Abstract


The study of grammaticalization of the compound directional verb“qilai”is not only one of the key issues but also a hot point in the field of Chinese research. Scholars at present always go through it on the horizontal levels. It is almost neglected that a necessary discussion of its grammaticalization process and the mechanism of it could be carried out on the vertical level.We can seek the mechanism of the grammaticalization of“qilai”from two factors, which are the internal change and the external situation of it, with a number of materials which are obtained on the vertical level.The paper contains four parts: The first one is preface ,which sums up the previous progress of the proposition and the basic theory of it .The second part summarizes the forms of“qilai”,the features and the influence of the grammaticalization of“qilai”in different periods and its lexical characteristics. The third section explains the grammaticalization of“qilai”from such points as its semantic meaning, its syntactic position, the frequency of its usage and cognition, the pattern of“ba”sentence,“qi”and“lai”. The last part is the conclusion, which epitomizes the mechanism of the grammaticalization of“qilai”and generalizes some issues which is yet to be penetrated into.
