Abstract


It is said that" food is the first necessity of man". Diet is the most basic and important part in human’s life. Thus, diet and the culture developed from it usually have an unusual significance to the human society. The core position of diet culture is irreplaceable in the concepts of Chinese cultural life.As we all know that letters or characters are the carriers of languages. So each word or character can be seen a record or reflection of the real life. As a part of the ideographic system, Chinese characters take intensive information. And the ancient Chinese characters even have a much stronger ideographic function. Since they often contain rich historical and cultural information of the word-formation times and the times before it, they can provide us valuable materials and foundation to our study on the ancient history. As the oldest and systematic calligraphy-book existing in China, "Shuo wen" has stored rich information of the ancient civilization. It has an exhaustive record to the diet culture of the pre-Qin times.
