Abstract

The transformation of Chinese modern national character that realizing human’s modernization, is an important aspect for Chinese modernization. A large quantity of modern and advanced intellectuals has done many researches to transform the national character, the content and the mode. At the same time, they proposed many constructive thought, thus forming a great tide of transformation of the national character for long time. Lao She entered into the literary arena after May 4 Movement, has become a model to have systematic and creative research on national character, following the way paved by Lu Xun and the new-vernacular literature pioneers.According to the materials which the author grasped, it is need to strength the systematic and comprehensive research on transformation of nationalistic question of Lao She’s novels, because both the work of inquiring into China’s traditional culture and aspects of philosophy are insufficient. This article will begin from these week aspects on research, taking comprehensive thoroughly refines of the characteristics of the Lao She novel‘s transformation of nationalistic subject as a breach, summarizing and analyzing the Lao She novel about constructing the ideal of new modernization person as the carrier, to thoroughly ponder the Lao She‘s novel on transforming nationalistic subject further and discuss the social value of the Lao She‘s novel on transforming nationalistic subject.The full text altogether is divided onto four parts: The first part, the author along the novel’s of Lao She creation path, briefly introduced Lao She’s interior exploration course about the nationalistic question .In the early work, Lao She taunted and criticized the national’s all sorts of incorrigibility through a series of lifelike character image portray, using the intense introspection consciousness, the humorous language and the relaxed writing style. From the middle 30’s, Lao She continued to carry on the nationalistic discussion with full brushwork of the sense of hardship instead of regular comedy style. The later period of his works taking Four generations in one household as representative, had demonstrated his reconsideration and the profound understanding. Among the novels, there were some about the nationalistic critique, some about the deep sympathy on national disaster, and the more about sculpturing the national spirits and the ideal nationals.In the second part the author summarizes systematically five prominent characteristics of the Lao She’s novels concerning transformation of nationalistic subject. First, exposition of the nationalistic weakness from the macroscopic angle of the contrast among the Chinese and foreign different nationality .Lao She places the typical character in the typical environment to perform the solemn comprehensive comparison, exposing and the critiquing the nationalistic weakness. Second, on the basis of rethink and critique to carry on nationalistic critique, Lao She’s novels is a kind of cultural critique based on the cultural and ideal, is the establishment after accepting the new value idea which derives from the Western advanced thought. Third, from the viewpoint of the Peking residents to introspecting and criticizing the national incorrigibility, Lao She places the credentials critique and the transformation on the basis of sculpturing the features of the Peking resident, by way of expression of the residential disposition to criticize the universal spirit existing in the national life. Fourth, criticize the national incorrigibility by doctrine of the mean and temperate manner. Lao She has not fallen into to the total repudiation of traditional culture and the personality, but displaying his lingering feeling towards it; When carries on the critique to the national incorrigibility, taking more temperate and sympathetic satire instead of the incisive sharp attack. Fifth, excavation of the nationalistic bright aspects in the reconsidering critique, Lao She is excavating the spirit treasure of nationalistic disposition and culture in ideal critique treasure.In the third part, the author summarized the Lao She’s novel about transformation of nationalities’ideal, namely the new modernization people fused the East and West outstanding national personality. The author believed that the Lao She’s ideal personality’s construction has experienced a gradation process. In the early period of his writing, he is too optimistic towards Chinese traditional spirit but respected the personality of the west. He constructs the new person image possessing too idealized characteristics and also rooted in the East in fact that is the complex of the east and the west culture. This is counter to the original intention of Lao She。In the 40’, Lao She raises high traditional consciousness and has the new understanding of traditional culture and the national disposition. He was eager to extol the national spirit thus weakening his early thought but retaining the basic spirit. From the feature of Qi Ruixuan, we can see modern society’s national personality, the national idea, the attitude of pursuing of knowledge and the truth as well as Confucius culture that has the consciousness of enduring humiliation, the prefer honor to life, protection of our homes and defends our country, rescue the national courage and the sense of hardship. Those presented Lao She’s“the ideal personality”. Here, the aim of fusing the East and West outstanding national personality to construct new modernization person is basically achieved.In the fourth part, the author has discussed the social value of Lao She’s novel about transformation of nationalistic subject. First the author analyzes from the philosophy angle, the ideology stratification plane and the control system stratification plane. It can be seen that Lao She’s novels about transforming the nationalistic thought had the direct influence on the politics at that time. Next from the cultural critique and the cultural transformation angle, it can be seen that Lao She’s novels about transforming the nationalistic thought had the indirect and long-term influence on the politics. Once more, the author believed that Lao She’s novels is always full of belittling to the wick and extolling to the kind so that readers may see perceptual contrast between the moral and the ethics with the balance choices, thus having ethic and moral value.
