Abstract


The 21st century is said to be remembered as a Chinese age; Chinese literature, classical poetry in particular for being the first part of pure Chinese literature embraced by westerners, is naturally expected to be enjoyed and appreciated worldwide. The current situation, however, falls short of scholars’anticipation. The practice of classical Chinese poetry translation goes ahead while the theory lagging behind. Theory inexorably invades practice: as a frequently raised issue, the untranslatability of classical Chinese poetry functions to block way to a successful poetry translation.An army of scholars in the concerning field have articulated dogmatically that poetry is beyond the reach of translation due to their firm conviction that faithfulness is the ultimate criteria of poetry translation. Trapped in the shell, translators of classical Chinese poetry need way out.Medio-translatology and seed transplanting theory broadened the horizon of translators and freed their thoughts, thus expended the translatability of classical Chinese poetry. The theory of seed transplanting freed translators from haunting fear of not being able to clone the original poem; creative treason further expand the tolerance of target readers. With mind set free, translators are capable to overcome more challenging translation difficulties while translating classical Chinese poetry.
