Abstract


John Maxwell Coetzee(1940- )is the famous writer in South Africa, who was honored for Nobel Prize in literature in the year of 2003."Disgrace" is shown frequently to be a point to study upon the articles of the writer. This work is to research what exactly the "disgrace" is, and thus to discuss the way of intellectuals in the social transformation era of new South Africa. Neither can be understood by the white, nor by the black; neither can live in the western culture that inspired them, nor in the reformed new country; neither can build a relationship with male, nor with the female, this disharmony is the phenomenon of conflict occurred between culture and conception. The characters of Coetzee are almost in this situation of communicative disability, and their fates reflect the disgrace that these intellectuals have met—individuals can not build a harmonious relationship with others, and the reason for that is the intellectuals, with the former thoughts ,to solve the problems of new country under the social transformation era.
