Abstract


The euphemism is a linguistic phenomenon , but also a cultural phenomenon . Euphemism as a universal means of language use , reflecting the social and ethnic characteristics . Not correctly understand and use euphemisms will to bring great obstacles to communication . With the increasing importance of the euphemism of concern for people and understanding euphemism has become one of the important objects of cross-cultural research this article first elaborated the the euphemism definition , origin , history and classification , followed by English and Chinese Euphemisms comparative studies, and explored the euphemism communication and the euphemisms compliance , and pointed out that the use of the language is the language structure and context mutually comply with the process . Then, from a cross-cultural perspective , manifestations and cultural connotation of the English and Chinese Euphemisms contrast. Cultural Differences of English and Chinese Euphemisms showing many differences . By learning of these differences will help us through the linguistic phenomenon to understand the profound cultural implication behind , so as to enhance the understanding of English and Chinese language and culture , and enhance cross - cultural communicative competence .
