Abstract


After the establishment of the Republic of China in 1912, intellectuals started to strive for representation and the Republic. Refer to the experience of the advanced Republics of the west, and in the light of Chinese context, they proposed all kinds of projects by what they had learned. This thesis thinks that these projects were changing with the political system of the west and domestic situation. The state of that the creations and the time were mutual results, with the shortcomings of the intellectuals and the dilemma of diplomacy, in the end led to the failure of the transfer of representation. Through the inspection on the interaction of Pan Lishan’s thoughts about representation and the on-going situation of political system , this thesis will display the plight of representation in China. Meanwhile it will tell the subtle relationship between the intellectuals’ personal selection and the outlet of modern China.This dissertation firstly discusses Pan Lishan’s rotation and reverse on the selection of polity and state structure. These two parts will tell the intellectuals’ propositions on the transfer of representation were deeply influenced by the political reality, and the intellectuals’ hesitation on their creation strengthened the chaos of the situation. The third part will analyze the ambivalence of the Republic’s intellectuals through their contradiction on the selection of different professions. At last, this dissertation will penetrate the relationship between the intellectuals’ personal selection and the outlet of modern China after the narrative of different selections of four figures of Zhang Shizhao, Li Dazhao, Liang Shuming and Pan Lishan.
