Abstract


This paper examines all published biographies and other works written by Zhu Dongrun over thirties years with a comprehensive discussion of Zhu Dongrun’s unique contribution to literary theory. On one hand, Zhu Dongrun’s sedulous pursuits of Confucianism lead to his keen interest of joining society; on the other hand, Zhu Dongrun’s literary attainments in both literary and history make him play an unique role in biography theory, and thus form his own perspective in this field.Zhu Dongrun biography promotes the literary elements in biography field in terms of the perspective of poetry and culture. He reviewed every form of biography in history, so that he can see the evolution of biography literature in latter day. He pointed out that biography literature is category of literature.Zhu Dongrun has abundance experience of writing. In the aspect of writing biographic literature, he had thought and discussed in some deep. Zhu Dongrun conforms to core requirements in biography: adopt the strict truth and reality policy. By sincerely following this policy, he consciously pursued the authenticity during the development of his biographical literature so that the literary biography would not lose its literary style or fearlessly dropping into the abyss. Zhu Dongrun clearly points out the inherent essentiality of morality in biographical literature, which endows biography with its soul. All reflect the persistent pursuit, which intellectuals of his days should have, in biography field, In terms of narrative styles in his biographical literature; it emphasizes the natural humanism which aims to explore the ultimate inner of human beings. What’s more commendable, he stands in the forefront of aesthetic structure, inquires into the structure of the language used in biography literary to a certain extent, which make biography full of technical features while get rid of its traditional historical characteristics. Finally, aware of the objective truth for the human beings, Zhu Dongrun’s biographies highlight the relationship between people’s thought and their days. Based on the strict truth and reality policy, biography critiques would gain us much more detailed knowledge and correct views about those writers or their literary works, an effect not to be neglected during the promotion in biography critiques across the country.By studying dual nature in Zhu Dongrun’s biography theory in details, the author helps discover the unique contribution of Zhu Dongrun to this field, which should be more clearly recognized by contemporary scholars.
