Abstract


In this paper, the NCEP / NCAR reanalysis monthly mean data and empirical orthogonal decomposition (EOF) to extract the regional atmospheric circulation in the Northern Hemisphere winter extratropical zonal symmetric mode. Where the first mode (variance 34%) of the positive phase of the performance of the following for the bottom of the stratosphere, in a high degree of regional westerly anomalies in mid-latitude regions Dongfeng exception, was quasi-equivalent barotropic structure in the vertical direction. The second mode (21%) of the variance contribution of the positive phase of the performance as a whole layer of the troposphere latitudes abnormal westerly and easterly wind anomalies in low latitudes, was quasi-equivalent barotropic structure in the vertical direction. Further analysis revealed that the Northern Hemisphere winter sea-level pressure anomalies associated with the first mode showed strong zonal symmetry, showing anti-phase changes in the characteristics of the polar region and the middle and high latitudes, the Arctic Oscillation AO ( Arctic Oscillation). Second mode associated with the Northern Hemisphere winter sea-level pressure anomalies also showed strong zonal symmetry, showing the changes in the characteristics of the anti-phase in the high-latitude regions and sub-tropical regions, defined as subtropical Oscillation STO (Sub- Tropical Oscillation). Further research that the the: STO exists not only in the winter, and have the entire winter half summer half does not exist.
