Abstract


Exploratory study has been carried on the innovation ability of graduate students who have been graduated from the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS) and the contributing factors, based on the innovation theory, inscapes of innovation ability theory and comprehensive development of creativity theory.1. The training of innovation ability focuses on the improvement of learning and scientific research abilities. The learning ability mainly refers to courses study, while the scientific research ability mainly includes three aspects, i.e. the publications of papers, dissertation levels and research work.2. An assessment index system for the CAAS graduate students’ innovation ability has been established. The system is made up of curriculum credits, publication of papers, dissertation level and research work. Through the analysis, it shows that the level of dissertation and research work play an important role in determining the innovation ability. This is also the characteristic and rule of cultivating graduate students in scientific research institutions, and enriches the theory of the cultivation of graduate student’s innovation ability.3. Dissertations were quantitative assessed by qualitative indexes. The indexes include the meaning of the paper title, literature review, methodologies and techniques, results and findings and the writing ability. Scores are given by several people independently, 50% is weighted on the opinions of the reviewers and the examination committee each, by which way the dissertation is assessed quantitatively.4. The impacts on the innovation ability of the graduate students were analyzed in depth. The innovation ability of the graduates is affected by many factors such as the background education, major difference, supervisor’s level, differences among the graduate individuals, the environment, etc, among which the supervisor’s level and differences between graduate individuals are the key factors that affect the innovation ability of graduates, wherever the creative minds and consciousness of the graduate play a key role in determining his/her innovation ability. The innovation ability of doctoral candidates is notably higher than that of the master students, which implicates the importance of graduate education. There is little difference between certain majors. Therefore, in the future cultivation of graduate students, at one hand, quality education and construction of supervisor team should be strengthened; at the other hand, different means and measures of cultivation should be taken according to the differences in education background, major and ability of the graduate students. Meanwhile, a database of assessment system for the innovation ability of graduate students and should be established and improved, and assessment is to be carried out irregularly in terms of special topic sampling. It is very important to improve the quality of graduate education ail-roundly by taking these measures.At present, the educational theory in China is still in a phase of exploration and development, being confronted with both opportunities and challenges. By summing up and analyzing 20 more years’ practice of graduate education at CAAS, and based on the 1st hand materials by sampling, we checked and analyzed the innovation ability of the graduate students and the impact factors, and discussed about the approaches and means of improving the innovation ability of graduate students. It is an attempt to the improvement of the assessment and education modes for agricultural graduates and their innovation abilities, opening-up of thoughts for graduate education and school running, and the enrichment and development of graduate educational reform theory and practice.
