Abstract

This study addresses developmental regulation at different ages. A conceptual model of optimization in primary and secondary control (OPS model) across the life span is presented. It integrates the selective optimization with compensation and the control theory.Developmental goals, control strategies were assessed in a sample of 473 children, youth, middle-aged and old adults from the schools and residents. All the participants received the OPS scale. The aim of the study was to explore age differences in developmental goals and developmental regulation. In order to study the control strategies in specific domain and the life satisfaction, about 20 of the participants were chosen at all ages to receive an experiment. The results were as follows:1. Older adults acknowledge reduced potential for growth and control, and we found age differences in developmental goals.2. Increased focus on age-appropriate goals for primary control striving were found. Moreover, older adults use secondary compensatory control to moderate their age status.3. The participants expressed their attempts to adapt psychologically to a given developmental ecology as a constraining context to development in the experiment.4.Control strategies showed a stronger positive relation to well-being.
