Abstract


The thesis deals with application of art of Chinese painting to watercolor in China, with emphasis on application of artistic spirit. The thesis is expected to help modern Chinese watercolor artists with their creation and to promote present theoretical research on watercolor in China.In chapter one the author points out a fact that great importance has always been attached to distinctive national characteristics in developing watercolor in China. Then the author analyzes why to apply art of Chinese painting to watercolor in China and application involves two levels: form and spirit. The author further states that application of spirit is what watercolor in China requires at present time. In chapter two the author holds that earlier application is confined to superficial copy of forms (including language, techniques), which fails to take advantage of artistic spirit. In chapter three the focus is application of artistic spirit of Chinese painting to watercolor in China. First, the author introduces several aesthetic ideas of Chinese painting, namely, "Zhuo", "Yijing", "Jingjie", "Yige and Xieyi", "spirit-resonance life-movement" as well as their connotation and features. Then taking pieces of works of some painters as examples, by quoting their own remarks and comments of other painters and artistic theorists, the author analyzes distinctive personalities of each painter, production and features of their works. After that, a comparison is made between features of aesthetic ideas and that of works and thus a conclusion is drawn that application of artistic spirit turns out to be a successful thoroughgoing one. Chapter four is conclusion of the thesis. In this chapter the advantages of application of artistic spirit of Chinese painting to watercolor in China are summarized. First, through application, works contain deeper national spirit. As a result, language, aesthetic interest and spirit of watercolor are more to Chinese taste and meanwhile traditional artistic spirit has got a chance of development and become full of life in the new era. What’s more, spiritual volume of watercolor is also reflected and acknowledged. Second, changes in form and techniques aroused by application help to enrich watercolor language system, enhance power of expression of watercolor, widen range of subjects and broaden applied fields of watercolor. Third, application enriches painters’ style. Fourth, change in volume makes watercolor become an independent art on the easel and strengthens influence of watercolor on society.On the whole, application of artistic spirit of Chinese painting to watercolor in China is necessary and also successful. It promotes development of watercolor in China. Because of application watercolor paintings with specific national characteristics, spirit of the times and distinctive personalities have emerged in China. So conscious application of artistic spirit of Chinese painting to watercolor can promote further development of watercolor in China.
