Abstract


Objective: To determine the feasibility of multislice spiral computed tomography (MSCT) especially MPR and VR reconstruction with Dental reconstruction technique in the tumor or tumor-like lesions of jawbone, provide reference for diagnosis and treatment of the jawbone tumor or tumor-like lesions.Methods: Forty-eight patients with jawbone tumor or tumor-like lesions underwent MSCT scans , of these patients 16 had Odontogenic cyst , 7 had Ameloblastoma,2 had Bone cyst, 4 had Fibrous dysplasia, 2 had Ossifying fibroma,1 had Osteosarcoma,3 had Gum-derived malignant tumor and 13 had Maxillary involved from maxillary sinus malignant tumor. Preoperative MSCT scanning was performed, the scanning data were transferred into the workstation and reconstructed using Dental technique. The findings of jawbone tumor or tumor-like lesions on Dental images were compared with those of multi-planar reconstruction (MPR) and volume rendering technique (VR) reconstruction images and surgery.Results: Benign tumors were most visualized as bone expansion changes with well defined ovoid or lobulated bordedines,and malignant ones often resulted in adjacent bony destruction and soft tissue masses. Dental reconstruction technique could directly and stereoscopically display the detail structures of maxillofacial diseases which comprised deep bone structures and neoplastic lesions.Compared with the axial, MPR and VR reconstruction images,Dental reconstruction technique was more accurate and superior in displaying the relationship bewteeen the jawbone lesions and the mandibular canal, incisive canal, mental foramen and root adsorption, providing more objective details for the jawbone lesions diagnosis and treatment.Conclusion: MSCT with Dental reconstruction technique can directly and stereoscopically display the shape,size,inner structure of jawbone lesions and their relationship with neighbor structures, so that it would be help for the therapeutic schedule and surgery and plays an important role for the prognosis of patients.
