Abstract


The Carolingian family is one of the most important families of western in early Middle Ages. The Carolingian family takes its name from one of its family member Charles Martel’s Latin name, Carolus. The family arose in the 7-9th century,which is the time of great transforming in Europe. The rise of Islamic civilization, the contraction of Byzantine Empire, and the invasion of the barbarians cut the Mediterranean world which ever unified in the Roman Empire into 3 parts. Three forces developed in their own orbit, in this process, Carolingian family guided the development of Europe unintentionally. Carolingian family emerged some great leaders in consecutive generations, they influenced the whole of Europe’s early medieval history. The process of the family’s emergence to prosperity is not only a dynasty’s replacement, but also the process of western Christian civilization from buds to prosperity. Therefore, this article which takes the rise of Carolingian family as the point, reflect the rise of western Christian civilization.The article has four chapters. Chapter one introduces the background of the rise of Carolingian family. It includes 3 parts: Part one, the rise of the Islamic world, the contraction of Byzantine Empire, and the contact between them brings a subtle change to the whole Mediterranean. Part two, the barbarian army who flowed into the Roman Empire influenced the Mediterranean. Part three, the influence of the climate change. It is also the important reason of tribe migration. Chapter two lays out Carolingian family’s rising means, mainly about how to using wars to defeat other barbarians, how to strengthen the contact with the church for support, and how to intermarry with other tribes. Chapter three introduces four representative figures of Carolingian family who lived in the period of the rise of the family. From their lives, we can see the power of the family became stronger and stronger. Chapter four discusses the influence of the rise of Carolingian family. The Christian which they support“put the whole feudal Western Europe into a political system”. Actually the change of the rules abandoned the Rome’s tradition. From then on, they focused their eyes on the European mainland which they were more familiar with rather than the Mediterranean Sea which they had been strange in gradually.Epilogue is a summary of the text. The rise of the Carolingian family is not only usurpation, but also a progress that barbarians absorb and change the civilization of Roma. Under the comprehensive function of social environment, the western Christian civilization formed.
