Abstract


A. S. Byatt (1936- ) is a noted British literary critic and novelist. She has published many novels, among which Possession in 1990 is one of her most successful novel, which helped her gain Booker Prize three months later. Possession covers a history from the very ancient times, through Victorian Times, to the modern times. It is a coherent combination of Myths, forklore and novels, to which the delicate application of diverse archetypes contributes a lot.This thesis is to analyze the abundant archetypes of the novel in terms of colors and characters. It consists of four chapters. The first chapter is an introdutory part with brief analysis of A. S. Byatt, Possession, literature review and Archetypal Criticism. The second chapter uses color archetypes to illustrate the personalities of Maud, Roland, and Blackadder, etc. in terms of white, green, gray, black and gold. White and gold stand for the lives of women, black and grey symbolize the authority of the male and gold features charm of human beings. The third chapter mainly analyzes three character archetypes—Snow White, the Star-crossed lover and the Platonic lover, which reflects the lives of the cursed beauty in the glass coffin, the fairy Melusina in the forest, Christabel LaMotte in Victorian periods and Maud Bailey in modern times, respectively. The four females stand for the pursuit of freedom and ideal life of woman in different times, demonstrating Byatt’s unique reflections of woman. Thus, this thesis illustrates why the poetess LaMotte would rather choose solititude in a house than stand out to have a marriage in Victorian Times and why the talented and beautiful scholar Maud prefers to live alone in the Tennyson’s building Turret than be involved in a relatioship or in a marriage. Then the subject“possession”is further emphasized. The fourth chapter is the conclusion, which infers that Byatt makes use of colors and characters to show the process of women’s struggle from invisibility to vitality and independence.By using various color archetypes and character archetypes, this thesis is a perfect example of the application of Archetypal Criticism as well as a profound demonstration of Byatt’s feminist consiousness.
