Abstract

Park Chi Won was an outstanding thinker of the realistic literature school and a reputable litterateur. He composed short stories in classical Chinese, which not only initiated critical realism novels in North Korea with the profound content and thinking of his works, but also largely enriched the treasure house of satiric literature in Korea and in the whole world with his excellent art of satire.It is the originator of satire of the classic novel in North Korea.The reason why Park Chi Won chose to compose in the way of satire is related to the times he lived, the spirit of his days, his acceptance of the satiric tradition of Chinese and Korean literature, experiences of his own, selection of the themes, and the intention of his literature creation. The atmosphere of his times when the Korean scholars ruled Korea corruptively and incompetently is the soil in which his novels developed. The thinking of realism equipped, promoted, and formed the basis of his novels. Besides, Park Chi Won’s mastering of Chinese literature enabled him to actively learn from the long-lasting tradition of satiric literature in China and Korea, and to intentionally adopt the art of satire, in order to castigate the ugly scholars of the ruling class and unfairness in the society, and to further voice his ideals and pursuit.Aiming at every aspect of the Korean society in the late 18th century, Park Chi Won’s novels possessed a powerful force of criticizing the reality. In the novels described those desperate, tyrannical, cruel, incompetent and senseless ruling class, those corruptive, deceptive, ignorant feudal scholars. Park Chi Won even sneered at the human relations and the ways of the lasting reign of Joseon Dynasty from the broader aspect of civil life, and criticized the humanity-damaging feudal ethics and pretentious, deceitful moral standard among friends. He adopted various techniques of satire, such as writing in a simple and straightforward style, irony, contrast, metaphor, and narration interspersed with comments. The author’s intention of exposing and castigating was realized and a perfect effect of satire was achieved.Park Chi Won’s position in the history of Korean novel is no second to Wu Yazi in the Chinese literature, with similar thinking, characters, and writing styles. As a result, the two authors can possibly be compared. However, since the academic circle has conducted deep and extensive research into Wu Jingzi and his great novel The Scholars, I lay my emphasis on the art of satire presented in Park Chi Won’s novels, and meanwhile give consideration to the fact that although their works expressed the same kind of deep reflection against Confucianism from the angle of criticizing the system of imperial examination and accusing the feudal ethics, in the respect of setting up an idealistic world, Park Chi Won visualized an Utopia, while Wu Jingzi portrayed a series of tragic idealistic figures. As for the techniques used by the two authors, they shared the same techniques in the following ways:realistic satire, and mild remarks.The Scholars is the model of the novels of realistic satire. Park Chi Won’s novels are realistic satire and fable-like irony; The Scholars and Park Chi Won’s novels are both mild remarks, but Park Chi Won’s novels have reprimanded ironic tone. So, it is important for comparing The Scholars and the art of satire presented in Park Chi Won’s novels
