Abstract


The thesis, taking Tongxin County of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region as a model place for investigation and case study, focuses on the history of Islamic education and its vicissitude in modern times.The introduction of the thesis elaborates the selected topic and its significance, makes a summary of literature and correlation research tendency and provides major theories and approaches for the research.In the first part (Chapter Two), a general introduction is given to the historical development of Hui nationality’s Islamic education in the northwestern part of China, including the origin and development of Islamic education in China, the system of Islamic education as well as the formation and evolution of Hui nationality’s Islamic education in the northwestern part of China. A stress is laid on the historical development, the schools of thought and the major viewpoints of Hui nationality’s mosque education in the northwestern part of China. Besides, a summary is given to the main content and the characteristics of Islamic mosque education and its status in the Islamic education of Hui nationality in the northwestern part of China. A more detailed elaboration is made on the Islamic education in China’s institutes of higher learning since the foundation of New China. Making a Comparison with the traditional Islam Mosque education, the thesis points out, while summarizing the similarities, the differences of two systems in the patternof organization and management, the teaching content, the educational system and the fund raised as well as their weak points respectively.The second part (Chapter Three) focuses on the Islamic education of Hui nationality in Tongxin County, touching upon a general survey of the county, the formation, development and present situation of Tongxin Hui nationality. With the stress on Islamic mosque education, the thesis elaborates the historical development of Tongxin Hui nationality’s Islamic education. This part also provides a systematic discussion of the function of Islamic education in the community of Hui nationality, including the transmission of Islamic culture, the consolidation of Hui community, strengthening of the idea of national education, cultivation of the talents of Hui nationality as well as the promotion of their ethical and moral awareness.With a case study based on the field investigation, the third part (Chapter Four), the body of the thesis, makes a detailed discussion of Tongxin County’s present situation of education, which covers two parts: the national education and the Islamic education. The approaches are respectively taken to conduct a careful investigation and study. A systematic summary of various forms of Islamic education in Tongxin County is given here, with their characteristics and current problems elaborated in details, which is the highlight of the paper. In addition, this part also makes a case study of Arabic language schools featuring Islamiceducation in the northwestern part of China.The fourth part (Chapter Five) of the thesis elaborates the relationship between the Islamic education and the national education in Tongxin County, pointing out the conflicts between two systems and putting forward the ways of coordinating development. The author holds that a win-win coexistence can be achieved by freeing mind and adjusting policies.In the conclusion, having made a summary of characteristics of Islamic Education of Hui nationality in Tongxin county, the author points out the impossible replacement of Islamic education by other education and the significant role of Islamic education in the modernization of Hui Community in the Northwestern China. Meanwhile, emphasis goes to the necessity of Islamic education’s modernization and the required initiative of cultural system.
