Abstract


There are more than six hundred thousand Chinese immigrants living in Australia. They speak both Chinese and English that is the reason why the language situation is quite difficult in Australia among Chinese immigrants. This thesis examines and analyses special features of Chinese language used by Chinese immigrants in Australia. This work is of considerable interest in China and abroad, providing definite information.The thesis is divided into 3 parts:1) Overview of Chinese immigrants in Australia. In this chapter we have introduced the general situation of Chinese immigrants in Australia. Since the last 170 years, Chinese people have continuously migrated to Australia due to which in the year 2008 population of Chinese immigrants in Australia reached more than 60 million. Additionally, during this period of time several Chinese communities were formed in Australia, where the most prominent Chinese dialects are: min nan (south min), yue, hakka and putonghua.2) General information about special features of Chinese language used by Chinese immigrants in Australia. In this chapter we have described the distribution of Chinese dialects in Australia, and also have comparative analyzed the commonly used words, Chinese loan words and some points of grammar in Chinese language of Chinese immigrants in Australia.3) Distinguished features of English language used by Chinese immigrants in Australia. In this chapter we present some special features of English language used by Chinese immigrants in Australia under the influence of Chinese language. From cross - cultural communication point of view, we found out that Chinese immigrants in Australia use“Chinglish”, clearly noticeable in the lexicon and grammar.
