Abstract

Since the 1940s non-interrogative function of Interrogative Pronoun has always been the hot topic of research in linguistics.“What" as a typical interrogative pronoun which has many non-interrogative functions has been the focus of linguists. However, there are still many divergences on its etymology and classification. Based on the abundant research results of the predecessors, this paper comprehensively summarize the divergences, synchronic research, diachronic research and application study on non-interrogative function of“what”in order to make people have a clear review about it.The first chapter is the introduction and mainly introduces research objects, the research methods, the research significance and the research status of this paper.The second chapter is the periodization research on non-interrogative function of interrogative Pronoun“what”, which is divided into three stages. The first stage was from the 1920s to the early 1940s and was called the embryonic stage, Li Jinxi (1924) as the representative. The second stage was from the 1940s to the early 1980s, the development stage, and Lv Shuxiang (1942) and wang li (1943)were the representatives . The third stage was from the late 1980s till now and it has come into the deepening stage.The third chapter is the synchronic research on the non-interrogative function of interrogative Pronoun“what”, mainly sum up its classification. Meanwhile, according to other people’s study, I will make a comment about the non-interrogative function of interrogative pronoun from seven parts: refers to question usage, cap, implicit, refers to the suspected, negative, metonymy, cases reviewed.The fourth chapter is the diachronic research on the non-interrogative function of interrogative Pronoun“what”. This part mainly comments its etymology and the manifestation in different periods.Through the carding, I find the deficiencies of their research and put forward my own views in the last part of this paper
