Abstract


"The new library movement" of China started during the period of the republic of China, which was also an important period of Chinese Ideology and Culture development. Via "the new library movement", China completed the evolution from old-fashioned library to new-style library. In order to consolidate the regime and innovate the ideology, being important social education institutions, all kinds of libraries became necessary supplement of school and family education at this time. Following the tide of the national library construction, Anhui provincial library, which was founded in 1912, kept innovating and developing from 1912 to 1937, and went into the rush hour of development from 1930 to 1935. Its social education function was brought out by completing rules and regulations, improving book-collection construction, promoting various auxiliary reading activities, such as founding reading party for children and adults, establishing professional library class, organizing Anhui provincial library association, publishing "academic style", journal of the library and so on. This paper analyzes the formation and reflection of Anhui provincial library’s social education function, and describes its practical activity from 1912 to 1937 objectively, then makes relevant assessment. Thus this paper will provide useful references for Anhui modern library career development, and enrich the content of modern library history of Anhui province, thereby promote the development of the research on library history.
