The widely spread visual illusion on map have caused heavy interference in the transmission of map information.So far, the research has focused more on geometric visual illusion rather than lightness illusion. What’s more, researchers rarely discussed how to avoid or rectify these phenomena quantitatively.Therefore, the paper made a study on the lightness illusion in gray-scale choroplethic maps. Potential influence factors which cause lightness deviation have been summed up according to tinting principles and the characteristics of color-graded statistical map, as well as the theories of lightness illusion.Based on the double-anchoring theory, an alternative model for lightness illusion rectification in gray-scale choroplethic map was put forward, which focuses on two influence factors:lightness and its articulation.Based on FLASH platform,40subjects were tested to measure the lightness deviation in various designed graphics. A linear model was established with least squares regression, and its significance was also tested. Furthermore, the paper concluded the conditions for SUPERWHITE’s existence, which provided good references for automated tinting in gray-scale choroplethic maps and increased the accuracy of map information transmission. Some disadvantages of the model proposed and possible advices for better rectification in gray-scale choroplethic maps, and future research fields were pointed out at the end.
