Abstract


That the UK-US economic competition in Canada between the two world wars is the epitome of contending for the world economic hegemony. This paper intends to investigate the economic competition in Canada between UK and US in three stages: the first stage is 1919 - 1928. After the world war I, as the British empire declined further and the United States rose rapidly , Britain and United States adjusted economic policies of Canada respectively and the economic competition of Canada started to present the situation of the attack of US and the defense of UK . The second stage is 1929-1933. With the world economy crisis breaking out, the economic nationalism of UK & US rose further, the two countries strengthened the policies and measures of protectionism in Canada further and the economic competition of Canada between UK and US intensified. The imperial preferential system, the high tariffs and the policy of good relations of neighbourhood make the economic competition of Canada between UK and US present see-saw situation, but that US is better than UK still existed. The third stage is 1934-1938. As the Reciprocal Trade Act released, United States began to implement a new foreign economic policy in Canda and Britain continues to strengthen imperial preferential system in Canda, trying to make vigorous efforts to turn the situation of declining economic tendency in Canada. But because of the political and economic changes in and out of the domestic of both Britain and United States, Britain and United States came to terms in a certain extent temporarily in 1938.The evolution of the economic competition situation in Canada between Britain and United States suffered from many kinds of factors: for one thing is the political and economic changes of international ; for another is the economic strength change between British and American; the last one is the Canadian government position and the impact of policy& measures. The economic competition in Canada between Britain and United States resulted in economic advantage of Britain in Canada declinging sharply, and economic advantage of the United States in Canada rising sharply. For Canada ,on the one hand, the economic competition between UK and US brings good opportunities to the development of Canada economy; on the other hand, the contesting of Canada economy between Britain and United States results in achieving a certain degree of controling some economic departments of Canda. The economic competition in Canada between Britain and United States provides us with valuable historical enlightenments: 1, The interests of nation is the eternal theme of international economic competition; 2, The economic strength is the important foundation of participating in international economic competition; 3, The key to success in international economic competition is bringing strong points into play ,avoiding weaknesses and playing comparative advantages; 4, The key to success is implementing flexible and effective economic policy.
