Abstract


From a review of the history since the founding of the Peoples’ Republic of China, so many great changes have taken place in rural areas situation. More and more traditional vernacular housings are taken placed by modern domiciles. Although both of traditional vernacular housings and modern domiciles develop and evolve under the same regional culture without the guidance from architects, however, they are very different from each other in almost all respects. Meanwhile, the great regional culture with bright light is vanishing in the process of urbanization stealthily. Consequently, when we face the issue that how to guarantee the great regional culture with bright light can continue to develop and evolve in the present and the future, what we should focus on more is not the architectural formation in the past, in the present or in the future, but the causes of the remainder architectural formation. In addition, we investigate to find the influential and authentic architectural traditions which are inherited well in this article.In the article, we adopt the traditional vernacular housings of Dayang Town in the middle reaches of the Qinshui River in SHANXI province as the example. On that basis, we investigate a mass of traditional vernacular housings and modern domiciles and sum up the five significant stages of the traditional vernacular housings after the founding of the nation and the characteristics of the traditional vernacular housings of Dayang Town after the research of the fundamental information. And then, we make a deep analysis of the process of the evolution and social causes on the four aspects—space and form, proportion and scale, structure and materials and Color and adornment. Therefore, we propose the evolvement rules of Dayang Town from traditional vernacular housings to modern domiciles after the founding of the nation and the physical and nonphysical causes behind the evolvement. At last, we make an objective assessment of the evolvement and propose recommendations for the future development of the modern domiciles.
