Abstract


Chinese-English parallel structure idioms are highly summarized the nationalproduction experience and living standards, and they are also the crystallization ofnational culture, to make a comparative study of them, not only can deepen theunderstanding of language, enhance the understanding of different cultures, but also isconducive to teaching Chinese as a foreign language.This thesis is aiming at the deficiency of domestic research on Chinese andEnglish Idioms, such as most professors make a detailed description on the structureof Chinese and English idioms, but the contrast for a particular structure idioms arefew, and very few people involved in the project of comparison of Chinese-Englishparallel structure idioms.Based on reading carefully the results of previousstudies,this thesis use two idioms in Chinese-English dictionary “Xinhua IdiomDictionary" and "English Idioms with Bilingual Explanations Dictionary" as thecorpus. First, we find out the parallel structure idioms from the two dictionaries, thenwe discuss similarities and differences of Chinese-English parallel structure idiomsand the reason of the difference between the respective proportion of their idiomsfrom four angles:symmetrical iconicity, holistic thought and analytic thought,hypotaxis and parataxis, character-based and word-based angle.so the study is acertain pioneer.This paper mainly carries out the following aspects:First, through access to the relevant literature to definite Chinese-English parallelstructure idioms and try hard to find out their nature and related problems.Second, figure out the Chinese-English parallel structure idioms through the“Xinhua Idiom Dictionary" and "English Idioms with Bilingual ExplanationsDictionary",then compare them and calculate their respective proportion.Third, analyze the similarities and differences of Chinese-English parallelstructure idioms based on the symmetrical iconicity angle; holistic thought andanalytic thought angle; hypotaxis and parataxis angle; character-based andword-based angle. In this paper, through the exhaustive search for the Chinese and English twodictionaries,we can find out the parallel structure idioms for statistical analysis, thenthrough detailed comparison to find data, summarizes the similarities and differencesbetween the idioms Chinese-English parallel structure.The similarities are:Semanticunity;Coordinations have the same part of speech;The solidification structure;Someidioms have lexical overlap.The differences are:The proportion of each idiom isdifferent;Chinese coordinate structure idioms do not have differentiate clearly marked,but English idioms are clearly labeled compound structure;Different formedways.After conclude the similarities and differences between the idiomsChinese-English parallel structure,we analyze the reasons of them based on theholistic thought and analytic thought angle; hypotaxis and parataxis angle;character-based and word-based angle.This paper has certain significance both in theory and practice.In theory, throughdetailed comparison of Chinese-English parallel structure idioms, we can deepen thecomparison of Chinese and English idioms, point out a new idea and method for thecomparative study of Chinese and English idioms, and promote the innovation oftheory.In practical application, we can enhance language learners’ perceptions ofidioms in nature, help them to study idioms well.Therefore, the research results can beapplied to the field of Chinese-English translation, comparative study of Chinese andEnglish, Chinese language teaching, teaching Chinese as a foreign language, Chineseinformation processing, etc.It will play a positive role in our learning and life.
