In Korea, most of the studies on the application of videos to language teaching mainly focus on the feasibility, and only a few on the specific teaching plans. This thesis firstly reviews the previous studies about applying visual materials in Teaching Chinese as a Second Language (TCSL) in Korea. Drawing upon some previous studies, this thesis uses Motivation Theory, Constructivism Theory, and Input Theory as the basis of its theoretical framework. It analyzes the problems which exist in the Korean TCSL classes, and put forward some suggestions as well.This study shows that there are three problems. First, teachers do not pay enough attention to the teaching method, for they always choose the model of "playing first and then explaining" and neglect the necessity of designing effective learning tasks. The second problem lies in the content. Most materials used emphasize Chinese culture excessively and neglects the language itself, and the teaching content is not systematic enough. The third problem is that there are no standard textbooks or standards for the selection of videos as teaching materials.Thereupon, this thesis puts forward some suggestions for the use of visual materials, which include these six points. First, to arose and maintain Korean students’interest, the technique of "guessing first and then playing the video" should be adopted in the TCSL classes. Second, teachers should assign some learning tasks. Third, the teacher should give explanations on the difference between Korean and Chinese in grammar. Forth, it is necessary for the teachers to follow "7th Korea High School Curriculum" to include all the important contents in teaching. Fifth, teachers should do more research on materials development. Sixth, this thesis suggests that when selecting videos, the principle of "modern, diverse and high quality" should be adopted.It is the author’s sincere hope that the new model proposed in this study about the application of videos in Korean TCSL classes shall be of some help for the TCSL teachers in Korea.
